How to Winterize a Motorcycle

Properly winterizing your motorcycle is crucial to ensure it remains in excellent condition during the cold months and is ready to ride when spring arrives. Here's a comprehensive guide to winterizing your motorcycle:
Cleaning and Protection
Start by thoroughly cleaning your motorcycle. Wash off all dirt, grime, and road salt, then dry it completely. Apply a coat of wax to protect the paint and chrome surfaces from moisture and corrosion.
Fluid Management:
Engine Oil
Change the engine oil and filter before storage. Fresh oil prevents corrosion and maintains proper lubrication. After changing the oil, run the engine briefly to circulate the new oil.
Fuel System
For fuel-injected motorcycles, fill the tank with fresh gas and add a fuel stabilizer. Run the engine for a few minutes to ensure the stabilized fuel circulates through the system. For carbureted bikes, consider draining the fuel tank and carburetor to prevent gum and varnish buildup.
Coolant
Check and top up the coolant, ensuring it's at the correct concentration for winter temperatures to prevent freezing.
Battery Care
Remove the battery and store it in a warm, dry place. Connect it to a trickle charger to maintain its charge throughout the winter.
Tire Protection
Inflate the tires to the recommended pressure. If possible, elevate the motorcycle on a stand to prevent flat spots. If you can't elevate it, place the bike on a piece of plywood or carpet to prevent moisture buildup under the tires.
Pest Prevention
Seal the exhaust pipes and air intake with covers or steel wool to prevent rodents from nesting inside your motorcycle.
